Digital Editions, New Ninth Gen Games, and More: Fanboy Roundup #2

June 24th, 2020: Fanboy Roundup #2
6/24/20

DISCLAIMER: I'm planning for these to all be focused on certain general medias that I like to discuss. Today's topic is video games, and I also want all of these are going to come out on the 24th of every month.

Topic #1: New Crash Bandicoot Game
Fans of the Crash Bandicoot franchise had been waiting for a new installment in the series since what seems like forever. They seem to have been waiting since 1998’s “Warped”, which was the final official entry in the series. The series has seen a plethora of spin-offs from racing games to a notoriously bad party game. The platform Crash series, though, got somewhat revived with a completely remastered compilation of all three official Crash platform games. A little less than a week before this was written, the box covers for “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time” were leaked on some website. This news went and came so quick I never even had time to research where they came from or anything. Now two days ago, on June 22nd, the official trailer was posted on the YouTube accounts for PlayStation and Xbox. This game is set to release on the PS4 and Xbox One and not the latest ninth generation consoles immediately. I really hoped to see this on Nintendo Switch upon launch, but I doubt it because there was no initial box art for the Switch in the leak, and the trailer was not on Nintendo’s YouTube account. I plan to get one of the latest ninth generation consoles near launch, but I’m somewhat screwed if this game doesn’t come to any ninth-gen consoles.

Topic #2: Xbox Project Lockhart
In PlayStation’s PS5 presentation on June 11th, they announced that the PS5 would be getting a digital version, with its feature of Blu-ray and physical game-playing abilities being removed. This is heavily rumored to be priced 100 dollars less than the PS5. If the PS5 is what it is rumored to be priced as (500 dollars), then this places the “digital edition” at 400 dollars. Aside from this, yet another rumor has been getting passed around the internet about the Series X’s digital edition. It has been getting called “Project Lockhart”, and is said to be only half the price of the Series X. If the series X is also priced at 500 dollars to compete with the PS5, then the Lockhart will be only 250 dollars. This, of course, is almost as expensive as the Switch (a full console with features other than specs far exceeding its competitors). Though still, it’s a new console for much cheaper than I ever could have hoped for, and I’d be psyched if it did end up being under 300 dollars. If so, I will tear open my wallet as soon as pre-orders go up.

Topic #3: New Free Switch Game "Ninjala"
On the release day of this very blogpost, a new Nintendo Switch game has been released. Of course, many games come to the Switch every week, but this one has been very hyped up seeing as it was marketed as a way bigger game than just another indie. The game, as you may know by now, is called “Ninjala”. The trailer seems like a fast-paced punk-style action online multiplayer battle game. If this reminds you of anything, especially Nintendo-exclusive IP’s, it’s probably Splatoon. Since the game was released today, it’s hard to see if the game is just yet another Splatoon clone, but the one review that I saw makes it seem much different. So far, all I know is that it involves ninjas and bubblegum but most importantly, it’s free, which means it’s already downloading on my Switch and I will likely review it in some point during July.

Topic #4: Latest EA Presentation Discussions
Everyone knows EA; the money-hungry villains of the video game industry, and shining examples of what we all dread the industry becoming. Though, as much as I hate supporting them, they made the Skate franchise, and Skate 3 is indisputably one of the greatest skateboarding video games of all time. Speaking of said franchise, in one of EA’s latest game presentations announcing things for 2020, they announced Skate 4 right at the end. Neither gameplay nor a cinematic trailer was shown, but it was announced that it was in development for the 2020 ninth generation consoles. In the same presentation, a new first-person spaceship shooter “Star Wars: Squadrons” was announced at only 40 dollars. This sparked a little bit of internet controversy because EA is an undoubtably money-hungry company. The fact that we’re supposedly getting a full new Star Wars game for only 2/3rds of 60 dollars is a little surprising. To my knowledge, not enough information has been given away about the game, but all we know aside from the presentation is that it’s not pay to win. This is obviously good news, but we’re still not sure.

Thank you all for reading the latest Fanboy Roundup. I was going to talk about how, despite the cheap “Lockhart”, the PS5 units will still outsell the Series X, though I kind of want to save this for another essay. I also want to wait until we have more information so I can make more educated points and guesses. Well, without getting too into anything else, I’m going to end this essay, finish Fuller House, and play the shit out of Ninjala. Good day, and I’ll see you on the 27th or 28th for a review of the latest Jason Mraz album.
